**Heavy Rain Causes Havoc in Alappuzha**

The picturesque district of Alappuzha in Kerala witnessed a deluge of heavy rain on Tuesday, leading to a series of unfortunate events. The intense rainfall resulted in the loss of a young man’s life, as a tree collapsed on him in Chettikulangara, near Mavelikara. The victim, identified as Aravind, was only 32 years old.

**Relief Camps Opened for Affected Residents**

In response to the calamity, the district administration swiftly took action by setting up five additional relief camps. Three camps were established in Purakkad village, one in Pattanakkad, and another in Alappuzha West. These camps provided shelter to 745 individuals from 270 families who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the adverse weather conditions.

Furthermore, the district faced the destruction of four houses and damage to 48 others between May 20 and 28, according to officials from the Revenue department.

The coastal areas of Alappuzha bore the brunt of rough seas as strong waves battered the shoreline. Residents living in areas without sea walls faced the full force of the relentless waves. In Kuttanad, several regions experienced waterlogging due to the heavy rainfall and increased flow of floodwaters from the eastern side. Floodwaters seeped into numerous houses, submerging rural roads and causing inconvenience to the local population.

**Irrigation Department’s Measures to Manage Floodwaters**

To alleviate the situation in Kuttanad, the Irrigation department initiated measures to open the Thottappally pozhi mouth. This action aimed to facilitate the smooth flow of floodwaters from the inundated region to the sea, preventing further flooding and damage to properties.

**Traffic Disruptions and Weather Alerts**

The adverse weather conditions led to the uprooting of numerous trees and power poles across the district. Traffic on National Highway 66 at Cherthala was disrupted after a tree collapsed onto the road, causing delays and inconvenience to commuters. As a precautionary measure, the weather agency issued an orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Alappuzha on Wednesday, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
