Tragic Drowning Incident in Ri-Bhoi, Assam

A young man from Assam tragically drowned while swimming with his friends in the Umtrew River on Sunday evening in Ri-Bhoi. The incident, which took place between 5 and 6 pm, has left the community in shock.

The deceased, identified as Ranjit Das from Japorigog, Guwahati, was swept away by the river, whose water level was higher than normal. Despite the efforts of his friends to rescue him, they were unable to reach him in time.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Upon receiving news of the drowning, police and rescue teams from Ri-Bhoi rushed to the scene but were unable to locate the body that evening due to darkness. The search resumed the next day, with the Byrnihat police outpost and rescue teams leading the efforts.

After hours of searching, the body was eventually retrieved from the river at around 11 am. The deceased’s body was then taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for an autopsy examination.
