The Special Branch in Johor Baru is closely monitoring groups known for extremist ideologies to ensure the safety and security of Malaysia. Johor police chief M. Kumar stated that radical ideologies and extremist thoughts are challenging to identify within society, making it crucial for the police to keep a watchful eye on such groups.

Kumar emphasized the importance of gathering information from family members, friends, and neighbours to prevent any potential threats posed by these extremist groups. He highlighted that changes in a person’s behaviour and activities can serve as indicators of radicalization, allowing the authorities to take necessary precautions.

Attack on Ulu Tiram Police Station

The recent attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, which resulted in the death of two policemen and injuries to another, shed light on the threat posed by radical extremists. The assailant, a 21-year-old man armed with a machete, was believed to have links to the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a notorious terror organization responsible for the 2002 Bali bombings.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of the morning, sent shockwaves through the community and highlighted the need for enhanced security measures to combat extremist activities. The swift response of the police forces resulted in the neutralization of the assailant, preventing further harm to innocent civilians.

Efforts to Combat Drug Offences in Johor

In addition to monitoring extremist groups, the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) in Johor has been actively cracking down on drug offences in the state. Kumar revealed that a total of 8,652 individuals have been arrested for various drug-related crimes since the beginning of the year.

Johor ranks third among police contingents in terms of drug seizures, with 1.72 tonnes of illicit drugs worth RM13.37 million confiscated by the authorities. The state NCID has also seized assets worth RM5.31 million from eight local drug trafficking syndicates, demonstrating their commitment to eradicating drug-related activities in the region.

The two policemen who tragically lost their lives in the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station were identified as Sergeant Ahmad and Constable Rahim. Sergeant Ahmad, a dedicated officer with 15 years of service, was known for his bravery and commitment to upholding the law.
