Singapore Airlines Plane Returns to Singapore After Turbulence Incident

After a harrowing experience of severe air turbulence on May 21 that resulted in one death and several injuries, the Singapore Airlines (SIA) plane, aircraft 9V-SWM, a Boeing 777-300ER, has safely returned to Singapore on May 26. The aircraft was cleared for departure from Bangkok after obtaining necessary approvals from the relevant authorities in Singapore and Thailand, as well as the investigators and the aircraft manufacturer. The engineering and flight operations teams at SIA also conducted thorough checks before the plane’s departure.

SIA spokesperson emphasized that the airline is fully cooperating with the authorities in the investigation into the incident that occurred during SQ321 flight over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, about 10 hours after departing from London to Singapore. The pilot made an emergency landing at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport after declaring a medical emergency.

Passengers and Crew Members

The SQ321 flight was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, including 41 Singaporeans and individuals from countries such as Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Britain. Tragically, one passenger, identified as 73-year-old Briton Mr. Geoff Kitchen, lost his life during the turbulent flight. Mr. Kitchen was a retired insurance professional and a musical theatre director, according to British media reports.

Mr. Kitchen and his wife were en route to a six-week holiday, planning to visit Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and Australia. His wife, who was also on the flight, was later taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Current Hospitalization Status

Following the incident, 44 individuals, including 43 passengers and one crew member, remain hospitalized in Bangkok for further treatment. SIA provided an update on their condition through a Facebook post on May 25.
