In a heartbreaking turn of events, 17-year-old Mohit Kashyap from St Inez, Panjim, met a watery grave in a water-filled laterite stone quarry at Bhatwadi-Nanora, Bicholim. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when Mohit and six of his friends, all hailing from Panjim, decided to go for a swim at the quarry.
**Rescue Attempt as Friends Drown in Quarry**
As they entered the waters and began taking selfies, tragedy struck. Three of them ventured into deeper waters and started to drown. While two of them were fortunate enough to make it out of the water, Mohit was not as lucky and tragically drowned.

Upon receiving news of the incident, the Bicholim Police quickly arrived at the quarry and conducted the necessary investigations. The body of Mohit has been taken to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim for a post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday.
**Previous Incidents at the Quarry**
This is not the first time such a tragic incident has occurred at the quarry. Last year, a 19-year-old youth from Nanora also lost his life while swimming with friends in the same location.
**Search Underway for Missing Person at Tillari Irrigation Canal**
In another unfortunate incident, a person was feared to have drowned in the Tillari irrigation canal at Usap-Nanora in Bicholim. The local community, as well as fire brigade personnel, are currently engaged in efforts to locate the missing individual, with the search set to continue on Monday.
**Government Implements Ban on Swimming in Hazardous Areas**
In response to the recent incidents of drowning, the Goa government has taken a proactive step by prohibiting swimming in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, lakes, and other water bodies across the State. This order, issued under Section 144 of CrPC, aims to prevent further accidents and loss of life by ensuring the safety of individuals.

Last year, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured the Legislative Assembly that the government would take measures to fence off water-filled mining pits and abandoned stone quarries to prevent mishaps.
