The city of Milwaukee came together on Saturday, May 25, to bid farewell to 4-year-old Zekani Hymes-Wilson, who tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run incident in April. The young girl was laid to rest at Grace United Church of Christ on Sherman Boulevard, surrounded by family, friends, and a group of compassionate motorcyclists who escorted her body from the funeral home.

**A Tragic Accident**

Zekani Hymes-Wilson was crossing the street with her mother, Gloria Hymes, near Teutonia and Vera when they were both struck by a vehicle on April 30. While young Zekani succumbed to her injuries, her mother sustained serious injuries and is still on the road to recovery. The entire community was left devastated by the senseless act of violence that claimed the life of an innocent child.

Authorities swiftly took action in the case, charging Donald Crayton, the mother’s boyfriend, and Adriana Merkel, 21, in connection with the hit-and-run incident. Shocking footage from the scene captured the moment when Crayton and his sister, who was a passenger in the vehicle, briefly stopped to check on the victims before fleeing the scene in a callous manner.

**Reckless Behaviour**

Following the tragic events, police discovered Crayton’s damaged vehicle abandoned on train tracks on Calumet between 81st and 87th streets. A high-speed chase ensued, leading to a crash at 72nd and North in Wauwatosa, where both suspects were apprehended. Merkel, who confessed to being Crayton’s girlfriend, is also facing charges in connection with the incident that claimed Zekani’s life.

**Repeat Offender**

Court records revealed a disturbing pattern of behaviour on Crayton’s part, as he had previously been convicted of a similar offence in 2018. Despite serving time in jail and being placed on probation, Crayton continued to flout traffic laws, with his offenses dating back to at least 2015. It was also revealed that he had never held a valid driver’s license, raising questions about his disregard for the safety of others on the road.

**Remembering Zekani**

As the community mourns the loss of a bright young soul, the memory of Zekani Hymes-Wilson lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability and justice in the face of reckless and dangerous behaviour on the roads. May her spirit rest in peace, and may her story serve as a catalyst for change in the pursuit of road safety for all..
