In a heartbreaking turn of events, three coal miners, including two individuals from Meghalaya, have tragically lost their lives after being trapped inside an illegal rat-hole mine in the Patkai Hills of Tinsukia district, Assam. The victims have been identified as John Nongrum of Jatah village, Phingel Umbah of Korhadem village in Ri-Bhoi district, and Dawa Sherpa from Bhojpur, Nepal.

Search and Rescue Operation

Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed the devastating news, stating that the authorities have received reports of the incident. Efforts are currently underway to retrieve the bodies of the deceased miners, with family members and a police team from Ri-Bhoi district on their way to Tinsukia to assist in the search and rescue operation.

According to Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, the tragic incident took place at the illegal Tikok West mining site between Bargolai and Namdang in the Ledo area. The miners were engaged in procuring illegal coal from the rat-hole mine when a sudden landslide occurred, trapping three workers inside. The fourth miner, who was assisting in coal transportation, narrowly escaped the disaster.
