In a major operation, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s Task Force has successfully dismantled an international smartphones smuggling and mobile phone theft gang, resulting in the arrest of 31 individuals, including a Sudanese national. The crackdown led to the seizure of 713 smartphones, valued at over Rs.2 crore, along with an auto rickshaw, two computers, and a laptop.

Among the arrested individuals is Mohammed Musa Hassan Gamaralanbia, a 26-year-old Sudanese national who is a phone accessories businessman residing in Bhismillah Residency in Nanalnagar. Originally from Gabr at Khartom in Sudan, Gamaralanbia’s involvement in the criminal network was uncovered during the investigation.
Modus Operandi of the Gang
The police investigation revealed that Hyderabad has been plagued by a series of mobile phone snatchings, with incidents escalating to even include a murder. The gang operated through a network of phone snatchers, receivers of stolen phones, and technicians who were involved in unlocking stolen mobile phones and tampering with IMEI numbers.
Illegal Operations and Market Activities
Stolen cell phones were being dismantled in markets, with components such as screens, cameras, and speakers being repurposed as replacement parts for damaged mobiles. The gang of receivers had contacts with mobile technicians in select locations, who were adept at unlocking cell phones and altering IMEI numbers using unauthorized applications.

The receivers of stolen cell phones facilitated the illegal transport of handsets, offering advance payments to snatchers to bring bulk quantities of cell phones. These devices were then sold to Gamaralanbia, who was involved in illegally exporting them via sea routes.
