In 2022, a coroner’s inquest was underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of an 18-year-old from a coastal paradise. The young man, Theo, had vanished without a trace, leaving his family and community in turmoil. I travelled to Belgium to meet Theo’s mother, Vinciane Delforge, and his younger brother, Lucas. Three years after Theo’s disappearance, their grief was still as raw as ever.

As I delved into this heartbreaking story, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to another tragic case – that of Jackson Stacker. Jackson, a 24-year-old traveller, had disappeared from Byron Bay in 2021 and was found dead a month later. His case is currently before coroner Teresa O’Sullivan, the same coroner who oversaw Theo’s case.

During my visit to Byron Bay, I was accompanied by Jackson’s mother, Sandra MacFarlane. The stark difference between the two stories was that Sandra was able to recover her son’s body, providing her with some closure, albeit fleeting. Jackson’s body was discovered in a remote paddock, with a hunting knife embedded in his chest and his skull separated from his body.

The circumstances surrounding Jackson’s death were puzzling and led police to initially suspect suicide. However, the presence of the hunting knife and the violent nature of his injuries raised suspicions of foul play. Jackson’s parents, Ian and Sandra, are determined to uncover the truth behind their son’s death.

Ian and Sandra believe that Jackson may have become entangled in Byron Bay’s dark underbelly, possibly involving the drug trade. The ransacked state of his van, with valuable items missing, suggested a violent altercation had taken place. Sandra described the scene as “destroyed” and believed that Jackson may have been chased to the isolated paddock where he was found dead.

Further complicating the investigation was the disappearance of Jackson’s Samsung phone, which had been in constant use before his death. The phone records showed activity in locations far from where Jackson’s body was found, raising questions about who had possession of the phone after his death.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties surrounding Jackson’s case, his parents remain resolute in their quest for answers. They describe Jackson as a young man who was seeking his place in the world, not someone who would willingly end his own life. Their determination to uncover the truth is unwavering, and they hope that justice will be served for their beloved son.

As with Theo’s family, Ian and Sandra are still grappling with the unanswered questions and the pain of their loss. They urge anyone with information about Jackson’s disappearance and death to come forward and provide closure for their family.
