Remembering Garney Burleson

One such soldier whose story deserves remembrance is Garney Burleson, a farm boy from North Carolina who served in the elite aero-rifle platoon of B Troop, 1/9 Cavalry, in the Vietnam War. Garney was just 20 years old when he was killed in action on January 28, 1971, in Binh Tuy Province.

Despite his youth, Garney displayed remarkable courage and composure under fire. His selfless actions and unwavering dedication to his fellow soldiers exemplify the true spirit of service and sacrifice.

Garney’s final moments were witnessed by his platoon leader, who carried his fallen comrade’s body to safety amidst the chaos of battle. On Memorial Day 2018, the platoon leader made a pilgrimage to Garney’s gravesite, only to find it unattended and neglected.

Moved by a sense of duty and respect, the platoon leader took it upon himself to honour Garney’s memory by placing a small American flag and flowers at his grave. In a heartfelt gesture, he left a note expressing his gratitude and ensuring that Garney’s sacrifice would never be forgotten.
