Arrest Made in Shooting Incident at Drake Knapp Center

The Des Moines Police Department has successfully made an arrest in connection with a shooting incident that took place outside a graduation ceremony at the Drake Knapp Center. The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Bradwick Michael Tukes. Tukes is facing charges of Going Armed With Intent and carrying weapons on school grounds, both of which are Class D felonies. Additionally, he has been charged with reckless use of a firearm, classified as a simple misdemeanor.

Police Response to Gunshots Fired

The incident unfolded at 5:39 p.m. when Des Moines police officers, who were stationed at the Knapp Center for security purposes during the Des Moines Public Schools Roosevelt High School commencement ceremony, heard multiple gunshots being fired outside. Without hesitation, officers rushed to the scene of the gunfire. By 5:41 p.m., patrol officers had apprehended two individuals believed to be involved in the shooting. One of them was armed with a handgun, later identified as Tukes. In response to the situation, more than 30 officers were deployed to the scene.

Detainment and Release

The second individual detained was a 17-year-old male resident of Des Moines. Following further investigation, it was determined that he was not directly involved in the shooting incident. However, he was found to have engaged in a physical altercation outside the center. As a result, he was released to his parents and referred to the Polk County Juvenile Court with a disorderly conduct charge.

Chaos Ensues Inside and Outside

The shooting outside the Knapp Center led to a chaotic scene inside the ceremony. Hundreds of attendees quickly fled the building to where a physical altercation involving five individuals was taking place. To quell the disturbance, officers resorted to deploying pepper spray. Thankfully, the situation was swiftly brought under control, and there was no further indication of danger in the vicinity.

Injuries and Evidence

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries resulting from the gunfire. However, one adult female sustained minor injuries after being pushed to the ground by members of the crowd. Upon investigation, multiple shell casings were discovered at the scene. Additionally, another handgun was found in a vehicle linked to one of the detained individuals.
