Ahmedabad Medical College Suspends Students for Ragging

In a recent development at a medical college in Ahmedabad, four students, including two women, have been suspended for allegedly ragging their juniors. The college, which is run by the AMC Medical Education Trust under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, is located in the Maninagar area of the city. The Dean of the Medical College, Dr Dipti Shah, confirmed the suspension of the four students pursuing a Master of Surgery.

During the inquiry process, it was discovered that the seniors would ask junior students to carry out tasks like writing prescriptions multiple times and verbally abuse them. The college administration took a firm stance against ragging and suspended the students for varying durations. Two students were suspended for two years and one year, respectively, while the other two were suspended for 25 days.

Family Alleges Assault on Kerala Student Leading to Suicide

A tragic incident unfolded in a college hostel in Kerala’s Wayanad district, where a 20-year-old veterinary student, Sidharthan JS, was found dead in the bathroom. His family alleged that he was assaulted by members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), leading to his untimely death.

The case is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with reports indicating that Sidharthan was subjected to continuous physical and mental assault by his seniors and peers for 29 hours before taking his own life. The Kerala Police handed over a suicide abetment case file to the CBI, detailing the horrific events that led to the student’s tragic demise.

Zero Tolerance for Ragging

Dr Shah reiterated the college’s stance on ragging, emphasizing zero tolerance for such unacceptable behaviour. The institution took swift action upon receiving the complaint from the first-year students and their parents, ensuring that the perpetrators faced consequences for their actions. The decision to suspend the four students was made unanimously by the college council, sending a strong message against ragging within the educational institution.
