High Voter Turnout in West Bengal’s Lok Sabha Elections Phase 6
In a significant development, West Bengal witnessed a voter turnout of 36.88 per cent by 11 am in the eight Lok Sabha constituencies that went to polls in the sixth phase on Saturday. The constituencies included Tamluk, Kanthi, Ghatal, Jhargram, Medinipur, Purulia, Bankura, and Bishnupur. Polling commenced at 7 am and is scheduled to continue until 6 pm.

Peaceful Voting Process with No Untoward Incidents
According to an official statement, Ghatal recorded the highest polling rate at 39.21 per cent, followed closely by Jhargram at 38.24 per cent. Tamluk, Kanthi, Bishnupur, Bankura, Medinipur, and Purulia also reported substantial voter turnouts. The polling process has been peaceful so far, with no reports of any untoward incidents from any of the polling stations.
Complaints and Security Measures
By 11 am, the election office in West Bengal received a total of 954 complaints. A significant number of 1,45,34,228 voters are eligible to cast their votes across 15,600 polling stations. Security measures have been stringent, with a large contingent of security personnel deployed to maintain order and ensure the safety of voters and polling officials.
Incidents at Polling Booths
Despite the overall peaceful voting process, a group of individuals protested against BJP candidate and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay at a polling booth in Tamluk. The situation required the deployment of additional security personnel to disperse the crowd and maintain order. Unfortunate Trinamool Congress Worker’s Death
Tragedy struck on the eve of the elections when a Trinamool Congress worker in Mahisadal, Purba Medinipore district, was killed by unidentified assailants. The deceased, identified as Sheikh Moibul, was a member of the local panchayat samity. The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to bring the culprits to justice.

Candidate Details and Security Deployment
A total of 79 candidates are contesting in the eight constituencies, with Bankura and Jhargram having the highest number of contestants at 13 each. Purulia follows closely with 12 candidates, while Medinipur and Tamluk have nine contestants each. Seven candidates are vying for victory in both the Bishnupur and Ghatal seats. To ensure the smooth conduct of elections, 919 companies of central forces have been deployed alongside over 29,000 state police personnel.
