Kolkata Violence Erupts During Sixth Phase of Lok Sabha Elections
Violence marred the polling process in West Bengal as scattered incidents were reported in several constituencies during the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections. The Election Commission received a total of 954 complaints by 11 am, with allegations ranging from EVM malfunctions to agents being prevented from entering polling booths.

Clashes Between TMC and BJP Supporters
In the Ghatal constituency, clashes broke out between supporters of the ruling TMC and the BJP. BJP candidate Hiran Chatterjee accused TMC goons of disrupting the voting process by not allowing booth agents to enter. Tensions escalated as BJP activists staged a protest, setting tyres on fire in the area. Sitting TMC MP Dev, seeking re-election, denied the allegations.
Violence in Kanthi Constituency
Sporadic incidents of violence were also reported in various parts of the Kanthi constituency. BJP activists protested against central forces, accusing them of assaulting voters. BJP candidate Soumendu Adhikari claimed that TMC and central forces were working against their party supporters.
Scuffle in Midnapore Constituency
In the Midnapore constituency, BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul faced “go back” slogans from TMC activists. A scuffle ensued between the two groups, leading to the intervention of central forces to disperse the crowd.
Protests Against BJP Candidate in Tamluk
At a polling booth in Tamluk, a group of people shouted slogans against BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay. Security personnel were deployed to control the situation and disperse the crowd. An inquiry was initiated into the incident.

Protests Against Union Minister in Bankura
In Bankura, BJP candidate and Union minister Subhas Sarkar faced protests while visiting a polling booth. The incident added to the growing unrest in the region during the election process.
Trinamool Congress Worker Killed in Mahishadal
In a tragic turn of events, a Trinamool Congress worker in Mahishadal, Purba Medinipur district, was killed by unidentified individuals. The deceased, identified as Sheikh Moibul, was a member of the local panchayat samiti.
Low Voter Turnout Amidst Violence
Despite the incidents of violence, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 54.80 per cent in the eight Lok Sabha constituencies by 1 pm. The challenges faced during the polling process highlighted the need for increased security measures to ensure a peaceful and fair election.
