Louisville police have released two videos showing portions of the arrest of star golfer Scottie Scheffler last week and revealed that the detective who arrested him was disciplined for failing to activate his body-worn camera. The videos, one from a fixed pole camera and another from a police vehicle’s dashcam, show Scheffler being taken into custody by officers. Scheffler, who was charged with felony assault, reckless driving, and other lesser charges, was able to make his tee time at the PGA Championship after being released from jail.

Scheffler, who described the incident as a “big misunderstanding,” maintains his innocence and plans to plead not guilty to the charges. His attorney, Steve Romines, stated that the golfer did not do anything wrong and that the evidence supports Scheffler’s version of events.

High-ranking police officials in Louisville have expressed concerns that the felony charge against Scheffler may be excessive. Prosecutors are continuing to investigate the case and have yet to make any final decisions.

During a news conference, Louisville’s mayor and police chief announced that Detective Bryan Gillis, the arresting officer, had been disciplined for failing to activate his body-worn camera during the arrest. Gillis received corrective action for violating department policy. Records show that Gillis has a history of reprimands and suspensions within the police department, although none of his prior suspensions were related to failing to activate his body-worn camera.

The police department released a memo detailing the disciplinary action taken against Gillis, who explained in the memo that he never powered up his camera during the arrest. Gillis has faced multiple reprimands and suspensions throughout his career, including incidents involving reckless behavior and failure to adhere to departmental policies.

Scheffler’s arrest occurred as he attempted to drive to the Valhalla Golf Club for a tournament. He allegedly injured a police officer who was directing traffic at the scene of a fatal crash. Eyewitnesses have stated that Scheffler followed instructions from officers and did not assault any officer with his vehicle.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Scheffler competed in the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday. The golfer managed to finish the tournament in a tie for 8th place after a whirlwind experience that saw him arrested, charged, and released in a matter of hours.

As the investigation into Scheffler’s arrest continues, questions remain about the actions of both the golfer and the arresting officer. The release of the videos and the disciplinary action taken against Detective Gillis shed light on the incident and the subsequent fallout. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story..
