A tragic incident shook the premises of Lokmanya Tilak Hospital General Hospital, commonly known as Sion Hospital, as a fatal hit-and-run accident took place on Saturday. The accused driver, Dr Rajesh Dere, a faculty member at the hospital, was arrested late that night. The victim, identified as Rubeda Shaikh, a 60-year-old resident of Mumbra, met with a horrific fate as she was rammed by a car while exiting the Outpatient Department building.
Victim’s Medical History Revealed
Shaikh had recently undergone a medical surgery at Sion Hospital and was called in for a routine dressing change on Friday. Unfortunately, as she was leaving the hospital premises near gate number 7, tragedy struck. The CCTV camera footage captured the horrific accident caused by Dr Dere’s car, leading to Shaikh’s untimely demise due to severe injuries.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The Sion police launched a thorough investigation into the incident, which revealed that Shaikh succumbed to her injuries due to severe blood loss. Dr Dere’s car was swiftly traced, and he was apprehended by the authorities late on Saturday night. The accused has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act for his alleged negligence and reckless driving.
Challenges in Identifying the Victim
One of the major challenges faced by the authorities was identifying the victim, as Shaikh did not have any identification documents on her. She was placed on a ventilator, and it wasn’t until Saturday afternoon that her son, Shanawaz Shaikh, was contacted. He later filed a formal FIR against the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident.

Reports suggest that the hospital authorities initially did not cooperate with the police in providing information about Shaikh’s identity and medical records.
