Victims of Herb Baumeister Continue to be identified

The chilling case of Herb Baumeister, the suspected serial killer who terrorized Indiana in the ’80s and ’90s, continues to unravel as more victims are being identified. Baumeister, a seemingly upstanding family man, led a double life that involved luring men from gay bars to his million-dollar property in Westfield, Ind., known as Fox Hollow Farm. There, he would brutally murder them and bury their remains on the 18-acre property.

Discovery of Bone Fragments

In 1996, the shocking discovery of over 10,000 bone fragments on Baumeister’s property sent shockwaves through the community. Authorities believe he could be responsible for up to 25 murders, although only 12 have been officially linked to him. Less than two weeks after the remains were found, Baumeister died by suicide, never facing charges or admitting to any of the crimes. At the time of the murders, he was a married man with three children.

Renewed Interest in the Case

In late 2022, Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison reignited interest in the case by calling on family members of missing men from the ’80s and ’90s to submit DNA samples to determine if their loved ones were victims of Baumeister. This effort led to the recent identification of another victim, Jeffrey A. Jones, who went missing in August 1993. Through extensive forensic genetic genealogy investigation, Jones’ remains were positively identified.

Identification of Additional Victims

Earlier this year, the coroner’s office announced the identification of Manuel Resendez and Allen Livingston as victims of Baumeister. The process of identifying victims has been challenging due to the condition of the remains, many of which were burnt and crushed. Despite the obstacles, the dedicated team of law enforcement and forensic specialists remain committed to bringing closure to the families of the victims.

Continuing Investigation

As of the latest update on May 22, there are still four DNA profiles that have not yet been identified, bringing the total number of confirmed victims to 12. Coroner Jeff Jellison emphasized the challenging nature of the investigation but reiterated the team’s unwavering commitment to solving the case. The tragic legacy of Herb Baumeister’s heinous crimes continues to haunt the community, but with each identification, there is a glimmer of hope for closure and justice..
