Jesus Ortiz-Plata’s Suspected Role in the Operation

According to court documents, 45-year-old Jesus Ortiz-Plata is believed to be the mastermind behind the human smuggling operation. Investigators discovered that Ortiz-Plata used cell phones to coordinate the illegal transportation of immigrants across the border in Blaine. This method allowed him to guide the immigrants and pick them up once they had crossed into the United States.

Furthermore, Homeland Security agents found that there were at least six cases dating back to 2022 where illegal immigrants who had been apprehended had the same phone number linked to Ortiz-Plata. This crucial piece of evidence led to the eventual arrest of Ortiz-Plata and his suspected accomplice.

GPS Tracking Leads to Arrest

Through the use of GPS tracking data, Homeland Security agents were able to locate Ortiz-Plata in Everett on Thursday morning. He was found in the company of three illegal immigrants and his suspected partner, 34-year-old Juan Cuellar Medina. Both men were then taken to Ferndale for further questioning.

Following the interrogation, investigators determined that there was enough probable cause to arrest both Ortiz-Plata and Cuellar Medina. The two men were subsequently booked into the Whatcom County Jail late Thursday night before being transferred to federal custody.
