A Nash County deputy found himself in a tense situation on Thursday morning when he encountered a man armed with a pizza cutter. The sheriff’s office reported that around 7:30 a.m., homeowner William Vandermeulen called 911 to report a home invasion along Big Woods Road in Spring Hope.

Encounter on Big Jim Road:
The man then fled on foot down US-64 Alt. and came face to face with the deputy on Big Jim Road. The man, identified as Juan Salazar, 33, was wielding a pizza cutter and charged at the deputy. In response, the deputy fired one shot, injuring Salazar. The deputy, fortunately, escaped unharmed in the incident. Salazar is currently in critical, but stable condition.

Investigation and Administrative Leave:
In line with standard protocol, Salazar has been placed on administrative leave following the incident. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will be conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting to determine the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
