Discovery of the Crime Scene

The case unfolded on April 30 when sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at a residence in the 21000 block of Riverview Drive in Lakehead to check on 75-year-old Pamela Castleberry. Upon arrival, deputies noticed signs of a break-in at the house, with Castleberry and her vehicle reported missing. Tragically, Castleberry was found deceased inside her vehicle the following day, May 1, in a remote area of Bella Vista.

Uncovering More Victims

Following an autopsy, Castleberry’s death was determined to be a homicide. Nearly a week later, on May 6, detectives revisited the area where Castleberry’s body was discovered and uncovered the bodies of two additional victims, Cynthia Duran, 41, and Louis Sanchez, 48. Their bodies had been badly burned, and their deaths were also ruled as homicides.

Connection to Merryman

Authorities stated that the bodies of Duran and Sanchez were not present at the original crime scene where Castleberry was found. Through investigative work, detectives gathered evidence linking Merryman to all three deaths. Merryman, who was already wanted for parole violations, was involved in a vehicle crash in the Oak Run area on May 13 and was subsequently taken to a Redding hospital.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Detectives arrested Merryman at the hospital, where he remained until he was medically cleared to be booked into jail. As of May 23, Merryman was being held without bail, with his arraignment scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on May 24 in Shasta County Superior Court.
