A shocking development has emerged in the aftermath of the deadly wrong-way crash on Highway 401 east of Toronto last month. Court documents reveal that the passenger who was riding in the cargo van involved in the tragic incident has been charged in connection with a robbery linked to the collision.

**Charges and Allegations**

According to newly-obtained Oshawa court records, Manpreet Gill, aged 38, is facing 12 criminal charges stemming from the day of the crash. These charges include one count of allegedly robbing an LCBO. It is important to note that Gill has not been charged in relation to the collision itself, which claimed the lives of four individuals, including an infant, following a high-speed police chase through Durham region.

Gill was identified as the sole passenger in the U-Haul van that crashed on Highway 401 in Whitby, Ont., on April 29. The crash occurred following a reported robbery at an LCBO in Bowmanville, located in the regional municipality of Clarington. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the vehicle weaving through traffic in the opposite direction while being pursued by a fleet of police vehicles.

The devastating collision resulted in the loss of three-month-old Aditya Vivaan from Ajax, along with his grandparents, Manivannan Srinivasapillai and Mahalakshmi Ananthakrishnan, who were visiting from India. The van’s driver, Gagandeep Singh, also tragically lost his life in the crash.

**Legal Proceedings**

Although Gill sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized after the crash, his current condition remains unknown. The new charge sheet, obtained at an Oshawa courthouse, reveals that police allege Gill played a role in the events leading up to the collision.

Durham police have refrained from commenting on the charges, citing the ongoing Special Investigations Unit (SIU) probe. Similarly, the SIU has declined to provide any statements on the matter.

**Court Appearance and Additional Charges**

Gill was scheduled to appear via video link for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa but did not attend, as per court records. The charges against him include robbery from the Clarington liquor store, possession of stolen LCBO merchandise valued up to $5,000, and breach of probation. Furthermore, Durham Regional Police allege that Gill stole merchandise from a Canadian Tire in Clarington on April 26.

**Past Criminal Activities**

It has been revealed that Gill was on probation at the time of the crash and had faced other criminal charges in recent years. In February, he was charged with stealing merchandise from an LCBO in Vaughan, as well as possession of stolen property and breach of probation. Moreover, in July 2022, he faced charges related to being in possession of a stolen vehicle in Mississauga.

The sequence of events leading up to the tragic crash began when Durham police were alerted to a robbery at an LCBO in Clarington. Details surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the SIU.
