The Arrest of Caleb Alfred Tifft

29-year-old Caleb Alfred Tifft, a resident of Tucson, Arizona, found himself in hot water when he was arrested on May 8, 2024, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Southern Arizona Violent Crime and Gang Task Force. The charges against Tifft included Cyberstalking and Transmitting Interstate Threats, stemming from his alleged stalking and threatening of a student at the University of Arizona.

The Allegations Against Tifft

The incident in question took place on February 7, 2024, when Tifft supposedly sent a chilling message via Facebook Messenger to the victim, stating his intentions to commit a heinous act. Following this threat, Tifft was served with an Injunction Against Harassment and a 12-month Exclusionary Order from all University of Arizona properties to protect the victim.

Continued Cyberstalking

Despite the legal actions taken against him, Tifft persisted in his cyberstalking behaviour. On March 1, 2024, he made an anonymous call to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, falsely reporting a potential mass shooting at the University of Arizona. The call was traced back to Tifft, leading to his eventual arrest.

The Legal Ramifications

If convicted, Tifft could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a hefty fine of $250,000, or both, along with three years of supervised release. It is important to note that an indictment does not equate to guilt, and Tifft is innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.

The Investigation and Prosecution

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the University of Arizona Police Department collaborated on the investigation, which was spearheaded by the FBI’s Southern Arizona Violent Crime and Gang Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Rossi from the District of Arizona, Tucson, is tasked with prosecuting the case.
