The events leading up to the shooting began when Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a disturbance involving a group of individuals near Apline Avenue and Old Dale Road. A resident approached the group, triggering a confrontation. Although the resident was not hit by gunfire, the suspect fled the scene and headed towards Knott Sky Park.
At the park, the suspect encountered a parked car occupied by Robert James McDonald and his dog. Without any known motive, the suspect opened fire, injuring McDonald. In a desperate attempt to escape, McDonald tried to drive away but ended up crashing into another vehicle. Tragically, McDonald succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the occupants of the parked car sustained minor injuries.
