Man Arrested for Murder of Three Individuals in Shasta County

A man has been arrested on three counts of murder following a harrowing investigation in Shasta County, California. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement after a series of tragic events unfolded in the area.

Discovery of Suspicious Circumstances

It all began when deputies responded to a welfare check for 75-year-old Pamela Castleberry at her home on Riverview Drive in Lakeview. Upon arrival, they found evidence of a burglary and discovered that Castleberry was missing under suspicious circumstances. Her car was also missing from the residence, prompting detectives from the major crimes unit to take over the case.

Gruesome Discovery

The investigation took a chilling turn when detectives located Castleberry’s abandoned car in a remote area near Bella Vista. Tragically, Castleberry was found dead inside the vehicle, with an autopsy confirming that her death was a homicide. The unsettling discoveries did not end there.

Additional Victims Uncovered

Several days later, detectives returned to the same area and made a horrifying discovery. Two more bodies were found, identified as 41-year-old Cynthia Duran and 48-year-old Louis Sanchez, both from Redding. The cause of their deaths was determined to be homicides, and it was established that these additional crimes occurred after Castleberry’s murder.

Person of Interest Identified

During the investigation, 33-year-old Michael Todd Merryman emerged as a person of interest. Merryman, who was on parole for residential burglary, was found to have connections to all three homicides. A breakthrough in the case came when Merryman was involved in a car crash in the Oak Run area of Shasta County.

Arrest and Confession

Following the crash, Merryman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Detectives subsequently arrested him at the hospital, where he remained until medically cleared. Merryman eventually confessed to all three murders and was booked into the Shasta County Jail on three counts of murder with special circumstances, in addition to a parole violation warrant.
