Violent Protests Erupt

In response to the attack, supporters of the BJP took to the streets in protest on Thursday, setting shops ablaze and blocking roads with trees that they set on fire. Security was heightened in the area, with Rapid Action Force and central forces deployed alongside the local police.

Blame Game Ensues

The incident sparked a blame game, with the BJP accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the attack, while the ruling party denied the allegations. According to police sources, no arrests have been made yet in connection with the incident.

Details of the Attack

The attack took place in the Sonachura area of Nandigram, where BJP supporters were guarding a market during the election campaign. A group of bike-borne men allegedly attacked them with sharp weapons, leading to the death of one woman and critical injuries to several others.

Political Fallout

BJP Leader of Opposition and Nandigram MLA Suvendhu Adhikari blamed the TMC for the attack, calling the perpetrators “jihadists”. However, the TMC denied the allegations, attributing the incident to infighting within the local BJP.

Community Response

Villagers who heard the workers’ screams rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. The injured BJP workers were taken to Nandigram Super Specialty Hospital, where one of them succumbed to her injuries. The critically injured victim, identified as the son of the deceased worker, was later shifted to Kolkata for further treatment.

Political Rivalry Intensifies

The incident occurred shortly after TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee held a meeting in Nandigram, where he targeted Adhikari and alleged fraud in the 2021 election results. Adhikari, in turn, blamed Banerjee for instigating the attack and warned of dire consequences.

Upcoming Elections

Nandigram falls under the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency, which is set to go to polls on Saturday. The contest between TMC’s Debangshu Bhattacharya and BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay has been marred by violence and political mudslinging, reflecting the high stakes involved in the election.

Call for Impartial Investigation

Amidst the political tensions and accusations flying back and forth, local leaders have called for an impartial investigation into the incident to uncover the truth and hold the culprits accountable. The people of Nandigram await the outcome of the elections with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating violence in their community..
