President Joseph Boakai has faced a setback in his efforts to combat corruption in Liberia, as his Assets Recovery Task Force imploded just two months after its establishment. The resignation of Emmanuel Gonquoi, the chair of the Physical Asset Recovery division of the Task Force, and Martin K.N. Kollie, a member of the committee overseeing the Task Force, has raised questions about the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption.

Transparency advocates have expressed disappointment in the handling of the Task Force, with accusations of potential corruption and mismanagement of funds. The leaked letter from Kollie, detailing the misuse of a $750,000 budget, including excessive office lease agreements and billboard rentals, has further eroded public confidence in the administration’s anti-corruption efforts.
Eddie Jarwolo, Executive Director for Naymote Partners for Democratic Development, emphasized the importance of building public trust in the government’s initiatives. Andersen Miamen, head of the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia, called for immediate action to address the crisis and restore faith in the Task Force’s integrity.
The Task Force’s mandate to recover stolen assets and prosecute corrupt officials has faced opposition from the start, with critics questioning its legitimacy and effectiveness. House Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa and other political leaders have accused the Task Force of conducting witch hunts and undermining the authority of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission.
Despite the challenges faced by the Assets Recovery Task Force, experts believe that President Boakai can still salvage his anti-corruption agenda. Lawrence Yealue of Accountability Lab suggested strengthening the asset recovery arm of the LACC and engaging in long-term efforts to combat corruption. Cllr. Jonathan Massaquoi of the International Law Group echoed the need for a genuine apology and a revised approach to asset recovery.
