Residents of Lakhimpur district in Assam were left in shock and outrage following the tragic death of a detainee at the Khelmati Police Station. The deceased, identified as 42-year-old Arsabh Ali, hailed from South Chandmari, a locality in Lakhimpur.

Details of the Incident
Arsabh Ali was taken into custody by the Khelmati police in connection with a stolen mobile phone that he had reportedly purchased. Sources revealed that Ali was suspected to be the leader of a mobile phone theft gang. However, the situation took a grim turn when Ali suddenly fell ill and collapsed within the police station premises, ultimately leading to his untimely death.
Immediate Actions Taken
In response to the incident, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh took swift action by ordering the suspension of the Inspector in Charge (IC) of Khelmati Police Station along with the night sentry. Additionally, an independent inquiry was initiated by Additional Superintendent of Police Biswanath to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ali’s death. All mandatory legal provisions and guidelines set forth by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) were being strictly adhered to in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Similar Incident in Bihar’s Araria District
Coincidentally, just last week, another distressing incident occurred in Bihar’s Araria district, where a 32-year-old man and his minor ‘wife’ allegedly died by suicide while in police custody. The man had recently married his 14-year-old sister-in-law, which led to their detention by the authorities as the legal age for women to marry in India is 18.
According to local reports, the man and the minor wife were subjected to physical abuse while in custody, resulting in their tragic deaths. CCTV footage from the police lockup captured the man’s harrowing act of hanging himself with a cloth, further adding to the grim circumstances surrounding the incident.

News of the two deaths quickly spread throughout the Tarabari village, inciting anger and frustration among the local residents. An enraged mob surrounded the Tarabari police station, pelting stones at the police personnel and ultimately setting the station ablaze in a fit of fury.
