Greek Court Dismisses Charges Against Nine Egyptians in Deadly Shipwreck

A recent court ruling in Greece has resulted in the dismissal of charges against nine Egyptians who were accused of causing a tragic shipwreck last June. The incident, which occurred in international waters, involved the Adriana, a trawler carrying around 700 migrants from Libya to Italy. The overcrowded boat sadly capsized near Greece, leaving only 104 survivors.

Release from Pretrial Detention

After nearly a year of pretrial detention, the nine Egyptians have been released following the court’s decision that it lacked jurisdiction to try the case. The ruling highlighted that the incident did not involve Greek citizens or a Greek-flagged vessel, leading to the release of the defendants. The individuals had faced severe penalties if found guilty of being part of a migrant smuggling ring and causing the shipwreck.

Controversy Surrounding the Case

Defence lawyers argued that their clients were wrongly identified as crew members when they were actually paying passengers on the Adriana. They claimed that the defendants were used as scapegoats by authorities to shift blame for the tragedy onto the trawler’s crew. The release of eight of the nine individuals from a jail near Nafplio has brought some relief, with the ninth being released from a different facility.

Renewed Calls for Migrant Protection

The shipwreck, which took place on June 14, 2023, reignited concerns about the safety of migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings. European governments have been urged to enhance measures to protect those seeking refuge. Frontex, the European border agency, reported an increase in illegal border crossings, particularly through sea routes.

Investigation into the Incident

Despite the court’s decision and the release of the defendants, the circumstances surrounding the Adriana‘s sinking remain unclear. Survivors allege that the boat capsized after an attempt by the Greek coast guard to tow it, a claim that has been refuted by Greek authorities. An ongoing Naval Court investigation is seeking to uncover the truth behind the tragic event.

Focus on Prevention

In response to the court’s ruling, defence lawyer Dimitris Choulis emphasised the need to focus on preventing similar tragedies in the future. The call for improved safety measures and increased awareness of the risks involved in migrant journeys has been reiterated in light of this incident. As the investigation continues, the hope is that lessons will be learned to avoid such devastating outcomes in the future..
