Thames Valley Police confirmed on Tuesday that a former Royal Marine who was recently charged with spying for Hong Kong has died. The man, identified as Matthew Trickett, was found dead in Grenfell Park, Maidenhead on Sunday evening.

Unexplained Death

The death of Mr. Trickett, aged 37 and from Maidenhead, is being treated as unexplained by the authorities. He had appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 13 along with two other men. They were charged with agreeing to undertake activities that would assist a foreign intelligence service, specifically Hong Kong, and forcing entry into a UK residential address on May 1.

Police officers found Mr. Trickett in Grenfell Park around 5:15 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a report from a member of the public. Despite emergency treatment, he was pronounced dead at the scene. A police cordon was set up in the park, with officers stationed near a forensics tent close to a children’s playground.

Investigation Ongoing

Thames Valley Police stated that a post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course, and they have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Mr. Trickett was on bail and required to register regularly at a police station. The police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as part of the standard procedure following a death in police contact.

In a statement released by the family, they expressed their grief over the loss of a beloved son, brother, and family member. They requested privacy during this difficult time. Mr. Trickett’s solicitor, Julian Hayes, confirmed the tragic news and stated that investigations into the death are ongoing.

Prior to his involvement in the espionage case, Mr. Trickett worked for the UK Border Force at Heathrow Airport and later joined Home Office Immigration Enforcement. He was also the director of a security firm called MTR Consultancy.

Charges and Arrests

Mr. Trickett, along with two other individuals, was charged under the National Security Act after an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command. The charges allege that between December 2023 and May 2024, they agreed to conduct activities that would assist a foreign intelligence service. It is also alleged that they forced entry into a UK residential address in May. The other individuals involved in the case were released from custody before May 10.
