Turbulence Strikes Mid-Flight Over Myanmar

One passenger sadly lost their life and 71 others were left injured after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence. The Boeing 777-300ER was approximately 10 hours into its journey and midway through meal service when the turbulence hit. The incident occurred while the aircraft was flying over Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Basin, causing chaos in the cabin and forcing an emergency landing in Bangkok.

Eye-Witness Account of Chaos

Passenger Andrew Davies, who was onboard the flight headed to New Zealand for business, described the sudden onset of the turbulence as turning a “perfectly normal” flight into a nightmare. He recounted how items and debris were thrown around the cabin, with passengers and crew members being tossed about. Davies vividly recalled seeing objects such as shoes, electronics, and cutlery flying through the air, creating a scene of chaos and panic.

Tragic Loss of Life

Tragically, a 73-year-old British man lost his life in the incident, with reports suggesting a suspected heart condition as the cause. The man was identified as Geoff Kitchen, a respected member of the Thornbury Musical Theatre Group, where he had dedicated over 35 years of his life. The British Foreign Office has extended support to the family of the deceased passenger.

Injuries and Medical Response

The Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok received the injured passengers, with at least 71 individuals requiring medical attention. Among the injured were citizens from Malaysia, the UK, New Zealand, Spain, the US, and Ireland, with six individuals in critical condition. The hospital reported cases of broken arms and head injuries among the passengers.

Assistance and Support

Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and apologized for the traumatic experience faced by all those onboard the flight. The airline is providing comprehensive assistance and support to the passengers and their families during this difficult time. The Ministry of Transport in Singapore and the US National Transportation Safety Board are actively investigating the incident to determine the cause of the turbulence.

Aftermath and Continuation of Travel

Following the emergency landing in Bangkok, nearly 200 passengers awaited onward flights to their respective destinations. A Singapore Airlines plane carrying 131 of the original passengers later departed for Singapore.
