Man Found Guilty in High-Speed Police Pursuit
A 23-year-old man, Ismael Herrera-Mondello, has been convicted for a 2021 high-speed police pursuit in which he fired a gun at officers while driving recklessly through a Sacramento neighborhood. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that Herrera-Mondello has been found guilty on multiple charges, including attempted murder on a police officer, assault on a police officer with a semi-automatic firearm, and felony evasion of police.

Details of the Incident
The police chase began on July 7, 2021, when officers spotted a stolen vehicle near 65th Street and Fruitridge Road. Herrera-Mondello, the driver of the stolen vehicle, refused to stop and led officers on a reckless pursuit through a residential neighborhood. During the chase, Herrera-Mondello repeatedly fired a semiautomatic gun at officers, with one of the bullets striking a nearby home.
The pursuit lasted about 10 minutes before reaching a dead end near 38th and Wallace avenues. Herrera-Mondello then fled on foot into Sacramento’s Avondale neighborhood, where he attempted to break into multiple homes by firing gunshots and causing property damage.
Standoff and Arrest
Herrera-Mondello eventually ran into a home and barricaded himself inside, engaging in a standoff with police. He continued to fire at officers from inside the home, prompting law enforcement to use tear gas to force him out. He was taken into custody at around 8:30 p.m. that night without any injuries to officers or residents.
SWAT Team Intervention
The Police Department’s SWAT team, crisis negotiators, and aerial drone teams were called to the scene to assist in resolving the standoff. After several hours of little movement inside the surrounded home, officers positioned outside reported shots being fired at them. Herrera-Mondello had positioned himself in the attic and was shooting at officers from a vent, making it difficult for law enforcement to apprehend him.

SWAT team members used armored vehicles to approach the home and launched tear gas inside to subdue Herrera-Mondello. He was then safely taken into custody, and a search of the home revealed multiple firearms and ammunition.
Sentencing and Maximum Penalty
Herrera-Mondello faces a maximum sentence of 195 years and 8 months to life in prison for his involvement in the high-speed police pursuit and subsequent standoff. He remains in custody at the Sacramento County Jail and is scheduled for sentencing in Sacramento Superior Court on June 28.
