Lexington Police: SC Man Tragically Killed in School Bus and Van Accident

The Tragic Accident

A devastating accident took place in Lexington, South Carolina, on Monday morning, resulting in the untimely death of Jon Douglas Ratcliffe, a 45-year-old man from the local area. According to officials, Ratcliffe was riding his motorcycle when a van struck him from behind, pinning him against a school bus.

The Scene of the Collision

The incident occurred at around 7:15 a.m. on the 100 block of Industrial Drive, close to Exit 55 on Interstate 20. Responding officers found that a van had collided with both Ratcliffe’s motorcycle and a school bus belonging to the Lexington 1 school district. The bus had come to a stop to pick up students when the tragic chain of events unfolded.

The Chain of Events

Investigations revealed that as the school bus halted, Ratcliffe’s motorcycle also stopped behind it. Unfortunately, the driver of the van failed to notice the stationary vehicles and crashed into the motorcycle, propelling Ratcliffe into the back of the bus. The impact pushed the motorcycle away and subsequently trapped Ratcliffe between the van and the bus.

The Tragic Outcome

Despite wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, Ratcliffe succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Among the seven students and driver on the bus, one student sustained a minor arm injury and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The rest of the students were safely reunited with their families away from the distressing scene.

The Driver at Fault

The driver of the van, identified as 20-year-old West Columbia resident Giovani Mendoza-Jimenez, also suffered minor injuries in the accident. Police determined that Mendoza-Jimenez was responsible for the collision and subsequently charged him with driving without a license, among other offences. He was taken into custody at the Lexington County Detention Center.
