Police Respond to Reports of Reckless Driving

The event began on Saturday night in Bridgeton, where reports of around 100 cars driving recklessly prompted police to respond. As officers arrived at the scene, gunfire broke out, resulting in five people being injured, with one individual in critical condition. The Major Case Squad has since launched an investigation into the incident.

Officer Injured in Altercation

During the chaos, the sideshow moved to New Halls Ferry Road near Interstate 270, causing a portion of the road to be shut down. An officer was injured while attempting to arrest a man driving a blue Dodge Charger, who was driving recklessly without plates. The officer, who was pinned between two cars, is expected to recover. The driver, identified as Antwon Hunter, 25, is facing multiple charges and is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.

Community Calls for Action

Local residents have expressed concern over the escalation of such events and are urging authorities to take action before more harm is done. Don Amick, a long-time resident of the area, voiced his worries about the potential dangers posed by these gatherings.

“It’s got to stop. It could get worse, and as time goes on, there are going to be people that are going to get hurt,” Amick stated. “We’re going to see more of this activity, I do believe.”

Contrasting Events in the Community

While the sideshow event was marred by violence and chaos, a family-friendly block party supporting black-owned businesses took place at Lovie’s Ice Cream & Eatery. Emilia Robertson, owner of Shots by Emilia, emphasized that the organizers of the sideshow had no affiliation with their peaceful event.

Robertson highlighted the positive impact such gatherings can have on the community, particularly in supporting small and black-owned businesses. Tionna Scott, a St. Louis native and assistant to Robertson, emphasized the importance of unity and peace in the community.

Appeal for Information

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shootings that occurred during the sideshow event to come forward and assist in the investigation. The Major Case Squad is working diligently to piece together the events of that fateful night and bring those responsible to justice.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless behaviour and the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace and safety for all residents.
