The Tragic Murder Case of Tyler Johnson

A Red Deer woman is facing allegations of the first/second degree murder of Tyler Johnson, a 26-year-old man from Grande Prairie. The trial, which has been plagued by delays, is now scheduled to resume next year. Johnson’s remains were discovered in a burnt-down house near Ermineskin Cree Nation on March 8, 2021. It wasn’t until October 2021 that the remains were positively identified as belonging to him.

The Extensive Investigation

The investigation into Johnson’s death involved multiple agencies, including the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, Maskwacis RCMP, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, an anthropologist, and an RCMP police Dog Services member. Additionally, Firestorm Consulting Group was brought in to determine the origin and cause of the fire that claimed Johnson’s life.

The Disappearance and Arrest

Johnson was last heard from on January 12, 2021, with his last-known whereabouts being south Edmonton, Wetaskiwin, and Maskwacis. After Edmonton Police Service issued a missing person notification on February 4, investigators began searching for his 2004 Audi A4. Brianna Lindsay Ruf-Deitz, then 34 and residing in Red Deer, was arrested on October 12, 2021, in connection to Johnson’s death.

The Trial Proceedings

Following several adjournments between October 2021 and April 2023, a jury trial for Ruf-Deitz was set for March 4 to 15, 2024, at the Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench. Although the trial commenced as scheduled on March 4, it was abruptly adjourned on March 8 without providing a reason. A new court date was set for March 19, during which an F8 Warrant for Committal was issued for Ruf-Deitz.

The Legal Complications

Subsequent court dates were scheduled for Ruf-Deitz, including appearances in Wetaskiwin and Edmonton. However, on May 14, 2024, another warrant for committal was issued. The continuation of the trial has now been rescheduled for February 3, 2025, at the Edmonton Court of King’s Bench.
