In a truly shocking turn of events, a man who died in a US prison where he was serving time for rape has now been identified as a serial killer. The Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP) revealed that Gary Allen Srery, who passed away in 2011 in an Idaho prison, was responsible for the strangulation of four girls or women in 1970s Alberta. The Breakthrough in DNA Technology
Through advanced DNA technology, investigators were finally able to identify Srery as the suspect. By building a family tree using data from public DNA sites and samples found on the victims’ bodies, they were able to link Srery to the murders. Eva and Patricia disappeared while walking together in downtown Calgary in February 1976, with their bodies found the following day on Highway 1 west of the city. Melissa, a recent transplant to Calgary, was found in a ditch 22km west of the city in September 1976. Barbara, who worked at a local food bank, was last seen walking home after a night out in February 1977, with her body discovered just outside city limits six hours later.
A Troubled Past Comes to Light
It was revealed that Srery, an American citizen, was in Canada illegally at the time of the murders. He had fled the US after being charged with rape in California, adding to an extensive criminal record for sex offenses. After arriving in Calgary in 1975, Srery lived under multiple aliases and used fake IDs to apply for social assistance. He later moved to British Columbia’s lower mainland, where he lived undetected until his conviction for sexual assault in New Westminster in 1998.
A Long Overdue Closure
Although Srery has passed away, the RCMP has appealed to the public for help in piecing together his time in Canada. The fact that he evaded law enforcement for over 20 years is particularly concerning. Superintendent Hall offered words of comfort to the families of the victims, stating, “Identifying the offender does not bring back Eva, Patsy, Melissa, or Barbara. But it is my true hope that their families are able to finally have some answers as to what happened to their loved ones all those years ago.”
