Tragic Loss of Hiker in Rocky Mountain National Park

In a heartbreaking turn of events, 23-year-old Lucas Macaj, a member of the U.S. Space Force stationed at Schriever Space Force Base, met a tragic end during a solo hike on Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. Macaj had successfully reached the summit of the highest point in the park on Mother’s Day, but unfortunately, he never made it back down.

Challenging Conditions and Search Efforts

The terrain and weather conditions on Long’s Peak proved to be extremely challenging for Macaj. Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers described the area as having winter mountaineering conditions, with deep snow, wind-drifted snow, ice, rocks, and boulders making the steep terrain treacherous. Shortly after Macaj summited, heavy snow, high winds, and low temperatures enveloped the area.

Search and Rescue teams launched a four-day search operation to locate Macaj. On the fourth day of the search, officials discovered his body on Mill’s Glacier. It was determined that Macaj had suffered a significant fall. His remains were transferred to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office for further investigation to determine the official cause of death.

Space Force Base Mourns the Loss

Schriever Space Force Base released a statement mourning the loss of Sgt. Lucas Macaj, a space operator with the 8th Combat Training Squadron. Col. David A. Pheasant, commander of Space Delta 8, expressed condolences to Macaj’s family, friends, and colleagues, emphasizing that the Space Force had lost one of its own. Macaj, who had joined the Space Force in August 2023 after transferring from the U.S. Marine Corps, was described as a valued member of the team.

Collaborative Search and Recovery Efforts

The recovery of Macaj’s remains was made possible through the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies and organizations, including Rocky Mountain National Park search and rescue personnel, Flight for Life Air Ambulance, the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Colorado Army National Guard. Additionally, various search and rescue dog teams from different counties and organizations contributed to the search and recovery operation.
