In the last year and a half, Brevard County has taken significant steps to clean up its waterways by removing a total of 85 derelict boats. However, there are still more vessels that need to be addressed.

Funding Approval for Boat Removal
Recently, Brevard County Commissioners allocated $150,000 from tourist development funds to remove an additional 15-20 derelict boats out of the over 30 identified in the area. This funding is set to become available in October.
Environmental and Navigational Hazards
Matt Culver, the coordinator for the county’s Boating and Waterways program, highlighted the dangers posed by derelict vessels. Not only do they present environmental risks, but they also create navigational hazards for other boats in the area.
Collaboration with Wildlife Conservation Commission
To address the issue, Brevard County works closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to recover the costs of removing derelict boats from their owners. Culver emphasized the ongoing challenge of securing funding for the removal process, stating, “It’s a constant battle between trying to take the boats out and having the funding to actually take them out.”

Despite the challenges, Brevard County remains committed to maintaining clean and safe waterways for residents and visitors alike. By addressing the issue of derelict boats, the county aims to enhance the overall boating experience and protect the local environment.
