Sankarasubbu, a resident of Moontradaippu, set himself ablaze near the main entrance of the Collectorate, causing himself severe burns.

Upon witnessing the horrifying scene, police personnel stationed at the Collectorate acted swiftly to extinguish the flames and rush Sankarasubbu to the Government Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for urgent medical attention. Doctors attending to him reported that he had sustained 70% burns from the self-immolation attempt. Sub-Inspector of Police Abdul Hameed, who bravely tried to douse the flames to save Sankarasubbu, also suffered burns on his hands in the process.
