Man Attempts Self-Immolation in Tirunelveli District

A tragic incident unfolded on Monday outside the Tirunelveli District Collectorate, where a man named Sankarasubbu, aged 35, attempted self-immolation. The act was a desperate attempt to bring attention to what he perceived as police “inaction” regarding a property dispute he was embroiled in. Sankarasubbu, a resident of Moontradaippu, set himself ablaze near the main entrance of the Collectorate, causing himself severe burns.

Swift Police Response

Upon witnessing the horrifying scene, police personnel stationed at the Collectorate acted swiftly to extinguish the flames and rush Sankarasubbu to the Government Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for urgent medical attention. Doctors attending to him reported that he had sustained 70% burns from the self-immolation attempt. Sub-Inspector of Police Abdul Hameed, who bravely tried to douse the flames to save Sankarasubbu, also suffered burns on his hands in the process.

Property Dispute Triggers Extreme Step

Investigations into the incident revealed that Sankarasubbu was embroiled in a property dispute with some of his relatives, which ultimately led to his drastic decision. He alleged that his relatives had unlawfully taken possession of his property, prompting him to file a complaint with the Moontradaippu police. Feeling frustrated by what he perceived as a lack of action on his complaint, Sankarasubbu resorted to the extreme step of self-immolation.

Police Clarification

However, the police clarified that the property dispute was already before the court for trial, as ownership of the property had changed hands. The police sources stated that following a heated argument between Sankarasubbu and one of the property owners the previous evening, he had lodged a complaint with the police. The Moontradaippu police had scheduled an inquiry for Monday morning, but Sankarasubbu chose to take drastic action at the Collectorate instead.
