Almost six decades after her remains were discovered, the identity of a murdered woman found off highway 1 in Sonoma County, California, has finally been revealed. Lillian Marie Cardenas, born in 1928, is the woman behind the long-standing mystery that has puzzled investigators for years.

The Discovery of Sonoma County Jane Doe

Back in February 1967, the unidentified remains of an individual were found in Sonoma County, California. The body was located at the base of a cliff north of Jenner, a small coastal town. The victim, a white female aged between 40 and 46 years old, stood between 5\’ 2\” and 5\’ 4\” tall. She was dressed in a long-sleeved white blouse and light-colored pants. The woman had likely passed away the year before, and her death was ruled a homicide.

The Search for Answers

Despite extensive efforts by investigators, the woman could not be identified, earning her the moniker Sonoma County Jane Doe. A forensic composite was created and shared with the public in the hope of eliciting information about her identity. Unfortunately, no leads emerged, and the woman was laid to rest at the County of Sonoma Cemetery. Her case was cataloged in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as UP102119.

A Breakthrough in the Case

Fast forward to 2022, when the California Department of Justice and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of Othram to conduct advanced DNA testing on the evidence. Othram’s team successfully extracted DNA and used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to create a comprehensive DNA profile of the unknown woman. Through forensic genetic genealogy, new leads emerged, leading investigators to the relatives of Sonoma County Jane Doe.

The Identity Revealed

Thanks to this breakthrough, Sonoma County Jane Doe was identified as Lillian Marie Cardenas, born in 1928. Cardenas, who hailed from San Francisco, had been estranged from her family before her tragic demise. The investigation into Cardenas’ death is ongoing, with updates to be shared as they become available.
