Arrest of Two Data Entry Operators for Embezzling Information

In a recent development, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan police (DMP) has arrested two individuals on charges of embezzling money through the trading of confidential information. The arrestees have been identified as Md. Jamal Uddin and Liton Mollah, both data entry operators.

Raids and Arrests

Acting on secret information, two separate teams from the Intelligence Analysis Division of the CTTC unit conducted raids and successfully apprehended Liton Mollah in Bagerhat and Jamal Uddin in Pabna. The arrests were made on Tuesday, following extensive monitoring of the suspects’ activities.

CTTC Unit’s Investigation

During a press briefing at the DMP Media Center, Additional Commissioner Md. Asaduzzaman, who heads the CTTC unit, disclosed that the unit had uncovered forgery activities linked to the suspects while monitoring social media platforms. The arrested individuals were found to be involved in the illicit trading of National Identity Card (NID) information, birth registration certificates, and Covid-19 vaccination cards.

Modus Operandi

According to the CTTC unit chief, Md. Jamal Uddin, operating as a data entry operator at the Election Commission, facilitated Liton Mollah in accessing NID-related information from the Election Commission servers. The arrested individuals would offer services such as providing fake NID cards, copies of lost NIDs, corrections to NID information, digital birth registration certificates, Covid-19 vaccination cards, and copies of TIN certificates in exchange for monetary compensation.

Confessions and Legal Actions

During preliminary interrogations, the arrested suspects confessed to providing fabricated certificates online in return for financial gain. They admitted to charging up to Tk 3000 depending on the nature of the service provided. The suspects operated through WhatsApp groups to attract clients, with Liton creating counterfeit certificates via a personal website and receiving payments through mobile banking.

Legal Proceedings

A case has been registered against the arrested individuals at Ramna Police Station in the capital, and they are currently in police custody as per court orders. The investigation into the matter is ongoing to uncover further details and potential accomplices in the illicit operation.
