Violence Erupts Outside University Campus

In a shocking turn of events, nine people were arrested in connection with an outbreak of violence outside a university campus in México state on Wednesday. The incident resulted in the tragic death of a 19-year-old man, identified as Óscar Yael, at the scene. However, authorities attributed his death to a fall rather than the clash between students from different educational institutions.

Arrests Made in Connection with Violent Events

The government of Naucalpan, a municipality in the metropolitan area of greater Mexico City, issued a statement confirming that municipal police arrested eight men and a woman “for their probable participation” in the violent events that unfolded outside the Naucalpan campus of the National Autonomous University’s College of Sciences and Humanities (CCH).

Clash Between Student Groups

According to reports, a physical confrontation and several detonations of firecrackers took place outside the CCH Naucalpan campus at approximately 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The clash was between “grupos porriles,” incendiary student groups known for organized violence to sabotage student life and disrupt the dynamics within educational institutions to achieve their objectives. Members of such groups are referred to as “porros.”

Details of the Incident

At least two individuals were injured during the clash, with the 19-year-old victim identified as a student at the Faculty of Superior Studies Acatlán found dead near the entrance to CCH Naucalpan. Initial reports suggested that the man was beaten to death by porros, but later statements from UNAM indicated that he died as a result of a fall from a vehicular bridge.

Controversy Surrounding the Victim’s Death

Despite UNAM’s revised statement attributing the man’s death to injuries from a fall, some individuals challenged this claim, stating that the victim was beaten to death in front of the campus. The news website Infobae reported that the man managed to get up after falling from the bridge and walked to the entrance of the CCH campus with the assistance of his brother before collapsing and succumbing to his injuries.

Investigation and Campus Safety

UNAM modified its statement later that night, reiterating the cause of death but omitting references to a bridge. The university confirmed that two other individuals were injured and that immediate medical assistance was provided. Campus activities were suspended to facilitate investigations by the México state Attorney General’s Office.

President’s Response and History of Student Groups

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed regret over the incident and confirmed that an investigation was underway. The clash between groups of young people from different educational institutions highlighted the long-standing existence of grupos porriles in Mexico, known for their disruptive and violent activities within student communities.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by educational institutions in addressing student violence and maintaining a safe campus environment. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the clash and the tragic death of the young student, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this unsettling incident..
