After the pursuit, Duran-Ruano exited the vehicle armed with a firearm and engaged in a standoff with officers. Despite repeated pleas from the officers to comply and put the gun down, Duran-Ruano continued to point the weapon at his head. A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene as a perimeter was set up.

After an hour of negotiation, Duran-Ruano attempted to walk away from the scene still holding the gun to his head. Officers fired non-lethal bean bag rounds in an effort to contain him, but he remained in possession of the firearm. Tragically, Duran-Ruano succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Eskenazi Hospital later that night.
