Details of the incident reveal that the stolen Mazda, taken from Boynton Beach, crashed into the river early Tuesday morning. The body of Marcus Griffin, 17, was the first to be recovered from the vehicle. Authorities have confirmed that the stolen car was being driven by a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old from Boynton Beach, with one of them wearing a ski mask at the time of the crash.
Sheriff William Snyder recounted the events leading up to the tragic incident, stating that his agency was alerted to the stolen vehicle on High Meadows Avenue in Palm City at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday. Despite instructions to deputies not to activate their emergency lights, a helicopter was able to track the speeding sedan on State Road 714. The pursuit continued as the vehicle headed west on Southeast Cove Road, eventually crossing Southwest Kanner Highway and plunging into the river.
The vehicle is believed to have driven over tire deflation devices before reaching Southwest Kanner Highway, covering a distance of 11 miles in just 6 minutes. While the two suspects were initially taken into custody, they have since been released as prosecutors work with detectives to determine potential charges in connection with the incident.
