Students and Staff Return to Mount Horeb After Tragic Shooting Incident
In a somber return to Mount Horeb Middle School, teachers and students gathered on Monday, May 6, for their first day back since a student was shot and killed by police outside the school. The community is still reeling from the shocking events that unfolded last week.

Superintendent Steve Salerno’s Encouraging Words
As the students were dropped off on Monday morning, district superintendent Steve Salerno greeted them with words of encouragement. Despite the tragedy that occurred, Salerno expressed confidence in the resilience of both students and staff.
“There’s a long road ahead, but we’re going to take things day-by-day,” Salerno said. He emphasized the importance of getting back to the routines of school and fostering a sense of normalcy in the wake of such a traumatic event.
Creating a Plan for Healing
Teachers and support staff met to create a plan for the day, acknowledging the importance of setting the right tone for the return to school. The focus was on providing a safe and supportive environment for all students as they navigate through this difficult time.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the tragic incident occurred when a citizen reported seeing a student, later identified as a Mount Horeb School District student, approaching the middle school with a backpack and what appeared to be a long gun.

Details of the Tragic Incident
Mount Horeb Police Department officers responded to the scene and encountered the student near the school’s main entrance. Despite their commands to drop the weapon, the student failed to comply and instead pointed the weapon at the officers.
In response, law enforcement officers discharged their firearms, striking the student. Despite efforts to save the student’s life, they tragically succumbed to their injuries on the scene. The weapon recovered was later identified as a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle.
