Details of the Crime

The incident took place at Bobby and Steve’s Auto World at the intersection of Washington Avenue South and 12th Avenue South just before midnight on Halloween night. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered 26-year-old Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed shot multiple times in the head while sitting in the driver’s seat of a running vehicle. Tragically, Haji-Ahmed was pronounced dead on the spot.

Investigation and Suspect Identification

A security guard reported seeing a man in a multi-colored letterman-style jacket jumping a fence and fleeing the scene after the shooting. Police recovered five .45 shells from inside the vehicle, determining that all shots were fired from the back seat. A torn piece of cloth believed to be from the shooter’s jacket was found next to a fence.

Investigators traced a phone number found in the victim’s phone to a woman who claimed to have driven to the gas station with her boyfriend and another unidentified man to purchase drugs from Haji-Ahmed. The woman refused to provide further details about the incident or the men involved.

Identification of the Suspect

Surveillance footage captured a man in a similar letterman-style jacket exiting the woman’s vehicle shortly before the shooting. This man was later identified as Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali. However, Ali had fled the country to Somalia shortly after the crime, causing the case to go cold.

In a surprising turn of events, a tipster contacted police in 2022, revealing that Ali had contacted her on the day of the murder, claiming he needed money to leave the country. The woman stated that Ali confessed to the crime, citing surveillance footage as his reason for fleeing.

Arrest and Court Proceedings

Homicide detectives learned in March 2024 that Ali had returned to the U.S. and was residing in Fargo. A warrant was issued to obtain his DNA, which was successfully collected and compared to the jacket fragment found at the crime scene. Tests indicated that Ali was among a very small percentage of the global population who could potentially match the DNA sample.

Police located Ali in Grand Forks and arrested him. He is set to appear in Hennepin County District Court on May 16 to face charges of second-degree murder. The community awaits justice for the tragic loss of Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed, and the legal process will determine the outcome of this case..
