Mexico City (AP) — Family members have positively identified the three bodies found in a well near Mexico’s Baja peninsula as those of two Australian surfers and one American who went missing last weekend, Mexican authorities confirmed on Sunday. The victims, brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia, and American Jack Carter Rhoad, were on a surfing trip when they were apparently killed by thieves who wanted their truck tires.

Baja California state prosecutors revealed that the bodies of the three men were dumped in a remote well about 4 miles away from where they were killed. The well, which was approximately 50 feet deep, also contained a fourth body that had been there for a longer period of time. Three suspects are currently in custody in relation to the case.
Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez described the harrowing events that led to the deaths of the three tourists, highlighting the brutal nature of the crime. She theorized that the thieves targeted the foreigners’ truck and tents for their tires, and when confronted by the tourists, resorted to violence. The bodies were then disposed of in the well, which was covered with boards to conceal the crime.
