Cottonwood police have recently made public segments of body camera footage that show one of its officers fatally shooting a man following a violent altercation that occurred on April 12th. The incident, which took place in the 500 block of South 12th Street in Cottonwood, is currently under investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety Major Incident Division.

## Details of the Incident

The events unfolded when an officer from the Cottonwood Police Department conducted a routine traffic stop for a vehicle that was driving without headlights and following another car too closely. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Cottonwood resident Donovan Jelicich, exited his vehicle despite being ordered to stay inside by the officer.

During a brief conversation, Jelicich can be heard shouting expletives while trying to find his registration and insurance information. Without warning, he suddenly attacked the officer, leading to a physical struggle between the two. The bodycam footage captured Jelicich attempting to take the officer’s firearm, resulting in the magazine falling out of the weapon.

As the altercation escalated, Jelicich and the officer fell into a nearby embankment, where the officer attempted to deploy his Taser to subdue Jelicich. However, the Taser was ineffective, and Jelicich continued to be aggressive, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm in self-defence.

## Aftermath of the Incident

Additional officers arrived on the scene and provided aid to Jelicich before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. Tragically, Jelicich succumbed to his injuries several days later due to the gunshot wound he sustained during the altercation. The officer also sustained multiple injuries to his head and eye and required hospital treatment and follow-up care.

In a statement released by the Cottonwood Police Department, the officer involved in the incident, who has six years of law enforcement experience, believed that his life was at risk, prompting him to use lethal force. As per standard procedure, the officer has been placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

## Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The Arizona Department of Public Safety Major Incident Division is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office for further review and potential legal action.

The release of the bodycam footage has sparked debate and raised questions about police procedures and the use of lethal force in such situations. The community is closely monitoring the developments in this case and seeking transparency and accountability from law enforcement authorities.

As the investigation unfolds, the Cottonwood Police Department is urging the public to withhold judgment until all the facts are gathered and a comprehensive understanding of the incident is achieved. The tragic events of April 12th have left a lasting impact on the Cottonwood community, prompting discussions about police training, de-escalation tactics, and the preservation of life in law enforcement interactions..
