Tragic Discovery of Missing Woman’s Skull

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a woman’s skull was discovered on the side of the road by Caltrans workers in February. The skull was identified as belonging to Johanna Swanson, a 46-year-old woman who had been reported missing by her family in December. Johanna, who did not have a listed city of residence, had not been seen by her family since the previous night in the 25000 block of Silver Aspen Way.

Discovery and Identification of the Remains

The skull was found around 1 p.m. on February 26 by employees working on the shoulder of the Valencia Boulevard off-ramp for the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol’s L.A. Communications Center log indicated that the workers contacted law enforcement officials after making the discovery. The off-ramp was temporarily closed during the initial investigation.

Officials were able to identify the skull as belonging to Johanna Swanson through dental records. The L.A. County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity in a statement released by Kelly Vail. The discovery of Johanna’s remains less than a quarter-mile from where she was last seen by her family has left investigators with many questions.

Investigation and Closure of the Off-Ramp

The investigation into Johanna Swanson’s disappearance and death is being handled by the California Highway Patrol’s Internal Services Unit. The southbound off-ramp of Valencia Boulevard was closed during the investigation, causing disruptions for commuters in the area.

Josh Greengard, spokesman for the CHP’s Newhall area office, was not immediately available for comment on the status of the investigation. The incident was initially referred to as Unidentified Doe No. 70 due to the condition of the remains and the lack of immediate identification.

County Sheriff’s Department issued an alert to the public regarding an “at-risk missing person” on December 16, indicating that Johanna Swanson, who suffers from depression, had not been seen by her family.
