The Tragic Shooting Incident

Edsaul Mendoza, a 29-year-old resident of Philadelphia, has entered a guilty plea in court for third-degree murder and possession of an instrument of crimes charges. The court records indicate that he will face sentencing on July 22. This comes after Mendoza fatally shot Thomas “TJ” Siderio on March 1, 2022.

The Unfortunate Turn of Events

The tragic incident unfolded at around 7:24 p.m. on that fateful day. Mendoza, along with three other plainclothes officers, was in an unmarked vehicle conducting an investigation into firearm violations in the area of 18th and Johnston streets. It was during this operation that they encountered two juveniles, one of whom was later identified as Siderio, suspected of involvement in a firearm-related case.

Escalation of Violence

When the officers attempted to stop the two boys after activating their lights, Siderio allegedly fired a stolen laser-equipped 9 mm handgun at the vehicle, hitting the rear passenger window. In response, two of the officers exited the vehicle and fired shots at Siderio, who then fled the scene. Mendoza, however, fired two more shots at Siderio, striking him in the upper right back as he lay face-down on the sidewalk.

The Tragic Outcome

Unfortunately, Siderio succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Presbyterian Hospital at 7:29 p.m. on the same day. The other juvenile, a 17-year-old, was detained for questioning but was later released pending further investigation. One of the officers in the vehicle also sustained injuries from glass fragments in his face and eyes during the altercation.

The Investigation and Recovery

The firearm used by Siderio was found to be loaded with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed in the incident. The case has since been under investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting and to ensure justice is served.
