Deputies Identified in Fatal Shooting

Following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of Benjamin Steven Woods, investigators have identified the Clark County sheriff’s deputies involved in the fatal shooting. Woods, a 41-year-old man from Prineville, Ore., died from multiple gunshot wounds in the shooting at the American Legion Hall in Salmon Creek.

Deputies Involved in the Shooting

Deputy Jim Payne and Deputy Michael Gonzalez were identified as the two deputies involved in the shooting, according to a statement from the Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team. Sgt. Fred Harrison and Deputy Enrique Cordero were identified as witnesses to the incident.

Payne, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2000, is assigned to the central precinct patrol. Gonzalez, who joined the sheriff’s office in 2021, is assigned to the swing shift patrol. Harrison, a patrol sergeant with 18 years of experience, and Cordero, assigned to the west precinct patrol since 2006, were also present at the scene.

Deputies Remain on Leave

All four deputies involved in the incident are currently on critical incident leave, as per standard protocol. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney’s office for review.

Details of the Shooting

The incident unfolded on Saturday when deputies responded to a reported carjacking in Hazel Dell. A man armed with a handgun and a woman stole a van, leading deputies to the scene. Subsequently, deputies were dispatched to a store in Salmon Creek, where witnesses reported another attempted carjacking.

Deputies located the stolen van behind the American Legion in Salmon Creek and saw the suspect enter the building. The man was shot inside the building by law enforcement officers.

Arrest of the Female Suspect

Following the shooting, deputies arrested the woman involved, identified as Lyndsey Dawn Jones, 42. Jones was apprehended around 3 p.m. in the 2100 block of Northeast 144th Street. A homeowner discovered Jones hiding in his garage and promptly called 911 for assistance.

Jones appeared in court on Monday, facing charges of residential burglary. Clark County Superior Court Judge Jennifer Snider set bail at $2,500 and scheduled Jones’ arraignment for April 29.
